Hospital Sisters Health System
In
1875 the Hospital Sisters of Saint Francis arrived in Illinois from
Germany and began their work in Alton, Springfield, Belleville,
Effingham, East St. Louis and Litchfield. Within three years of
their arrival, they were building hospitals in Effingham and
Springfield. Within twelve years six hospitals had been built and
the cornerstone of a seventh had been laid.
The complexity of the hospital system grew and so the Sisters
developed a small central staff of specialists in 1962 to provide
consultation and support services. This development was further
refined by the incorporation of the Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS)
in 1978. Today, the Hospitals Sister Health System is a significant
provider of Catholic health care services in the United States with
thirteen hospitals throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. The Corporate
Office located adjacent to St. Francis Convent in Springfield,
Illinois, acts as the unifying element between all System
Affiliates.
Mission Statement
The primary mission of Hospital Sisters Health System is to
provide a structure and the means where by the Hospital Sisters of
the Third Order of St. Francis continue their healing mission in the
Roman Catholic Church. Hospitals and other institutionally based
programs are the primary means of responding to those in need.
Service is regarded as a ministry of healing which exemplifies the
Gospel values of compassion, justice and reverence for life
throughout its continuum.
Vision for Tomorrow
While continuing to improve and advance the hospitals which they
now sponsor as their main thrust in the health care field, the
Hospital Sisters are also involved with programs in chemical
dependency, care of the aged, and care of the terminally ill. In
partnership with others committed to the same goals, and as a viable
force which will help to shape health care in America, the Hospital
Sisters will carry on more gloriously than ever; inspired by the
spirit of Christ and encouraged and strengthened by the truth of
their motto: "The Charity of Christ Conquers All."
