Managing Hazardous Drugs and Hazardous Drug Waste

This session will examine the recently released ASHP Guidance on Handling Hazardous Drugs as it relates to the NIOSH Hazardous Drug Alert. Specific procedures for safe hazardous drug management from OSHA perspectives will be reviewed. We will also differentiate hazardous pharmaceutical waste from an EPA and state regulatory perspective and will offer models for implementing a complete pharmaceutical waste management system.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Define a hazardous drug based on the revised NIOSH definition as well as hazardous drug waste as defined by the USEPA Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

  2. List the six major functions required for an employer to protect employees from contamination with hazardous drugs.

  3. Apply the use of appropriate personal protective equipment in specific situations from receipt of hazardous drugs through disposal.

  4. Identify which waste streams are appropriate for hazardous and non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
