This session will examine the recently released ASHP Guidance on
Handling Hazardous Drugs as it relates to the NIOSH Hazardous Drug
Alert. Specific procedures for safe hazardous drug management from OSHA
perspectives will be reviewed. We will also differentiate hazardous
pharmaceutical waste from an EPA and state regulatory perspective and
will offer models for implementing a complete pharmaceutical waste
management system.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

Define a hazardous drug based on the revised NIOSH definition as
well as hazardous drug waste as defined by the USEPA Resource
Conservation and Recovery Act.

List the six major functions required for an employer to protect
employees from contamination with hazardous drugs.

Apply the use of appropriate personal protective equipment in
specific situations from receipt of hazardous drugs through
disposal.

Identify which waste streams are appropriate for hazardous and
non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste.

Evaluate current pharmaceutical waste management implementation
models based on the needs of individual organizations.
Presenter
Charlotte Smith, RPh, MS is President of
PharmEcology Associates, LLC which she founded in 2000 to assist the
healthcare industry in reducing and managing pharmaceutical waste. She
co-founded Capital Returns, Inc., a nationally known pharmaceutical
reverse distributor in 1991 and for 10 years served as President and
Chief Regulatory Advisor. Ms. Smith is a Registered Pharmacist who
received her BS in Pharmacy and MS in Continuing and Vocational
Education from the University of Wisconsin. She is a member of the
Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin, the American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists, and the American Society for Healthcare Environmental
Services. She serves on the NIOSH Hazardous Drug Working Group and is
Chair of the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy Board of
Visitors.
