Managing Dyslipidemia: Focus on ATP III Guidelines

 

Dyslipidemias are a leading risk factor for both cardiovascular disease and stroke, two of the leading causes of mortality in the United States. This presentation gives a review of both a drug and non-drug related treatment of dyslipidemias, as well as risk stratifications and lipid goals based on the guidelines set forth in the Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines. A brief outline of current assessment and treatment guidelines for the treatment of dyslipidemias and adolescents is also given.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1.  Summarize the ATP III guidelines for hyperlipidemia management and apply them to patient cases.
  2.  Recognize the recent changes in hyperlipidemia management guidelines.
  3.  Describe the risk factors and risk equivalents for CHD.
  4.  Know the recommendations for treatment of dyslipidemias in adolescents/children.

Presenter

Tricia Williams received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2002. She served as a clinical pharmacist and pharmacy student preceptor at Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, Indiana from 2002-2005. She is currently a staff pharmacist at Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette, Indiana.
