Advancements in Stroke Care

The presentation will include an overview of the emerging continuum of care for stroke patients with an emphasis on emerging technologies and practice patterns for the prevention and treatment of stroke. Molecular diagnostics, imaging and endovascular approaches will become the standard of care for triaging, assessing and treating patients with stroke. As technology changes the way care is delivered so will it change the providers who will dominate stroke care. The presentation will also introduce the emerging stroke team and discuss the importance of key members in the future of care for stroke patients.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the emerging role of endovascular approaches in the treatment of acute stroke.

  2. Describe the emerging use of endovascular approaches in the prevention of stroke.

  3. Describe the use of imaging and emerging imaging applications in stroke patient assessment and treatment planning.

  4. Describe emerging pharmaceutical alternatives to tPA for the disruption of stroke causing emboli.

Presenter

Jayme L. M. Zage, PhD is the Content Lead and Director of Sg2's Neurosciences Intelligence Program. She brings to Sg2 a diversified background that includes research in neurobiology and cardiovascular disease and consulting in the pharmaceutical sector. Over the past several years, Jayme has led content development for a number of Sg2 publications, including Briefings and Focus Reports on neurosciences and women's health topics. She has provided consulting and strategic planning services for a variety of clients.

Jayme received her PhD from Columbia University in New York City, where her research and studies focused on understanding the molecular mechanism of disease. Her examination of basic cellular function—specifically, endocytic membrane trafficking—can be applied to a number of diseases, including diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, viral and bacterial infection and cystic fibrosis. Jayme remained at Columbia as an NIH-funded postdoctoral fellow, researching the function of neuronal proteins, molecules that have been implicated in a number of diseases including ALS. In her postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago, she examined the role of presenilin in Alzheimer’s disease. Her findings are published in several leading journals. Prior to joining Sg2, Jayme worked with Technomic International in their pharmaceutical group, and at Abbott Laboratories in the company’s drug-coated stent program. These experiences extend her field of expertise to include drug development, marketing and regulatory.
